On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
